It is hard for tour operators to keep up to date with the costs of tourist attractions and


accommodation for groups, particularly because they get different prices than what is available to the general public.


 


In 1983 I started The Australian Tour Operators' Directory. It listed group prices. Tourist attractions were listed free of charge (they were all needed) and accommodation listings were charged for.


 


There was substantial advertising. The directory was sent free of charge to all coach and tour


operators and quickly became very popular.


 


In 1989 I sold the business.


The woman who took it over made a mistake - when she felt tourism properties were not doing well she didn't increase her prices. Thus, with inflation, her profit kept falling. In 1917 she closed the business because she wasn't making any money.


 


This created an opportunity for a website to replace the directory.


The website would be more popular with tour operators and would save the cost of printing and mailing to 2,700 of them.


 


It could be started with no money up front.


I built up a list of 3,300 wineries. (The tour directory did not have these.) All though these are


tourist attractions they should be charged a listing fee because you would not need to list them all.


A few sales people would be employed to work from home on commission.


For the first month they would spend their time generating income by selling listings to wineries.


 


The business would start in the beginning of April and would make sales until the end of October.


 


During this time there would be two mailings to tourist attractions and motels with discounts - one for prepayment and another for early booking.


 


After wineries, reps would be selling to


15,000 restaurants,


1,900 caravan parks (looking for those offering campsites to tour operators),


and 4,500 service stations (looking for those selling diesel).


As they contacted these properties they would record their email addresses. These addresses could be used to contact these properties in future years.


 


Additionally, I have increased the number of tourist attractions by about 50%.


 


For us to make databases available and assist someone to operate this business we are asking $2,000 and 10% of annual turnover.
